According to the American Heart Association. Someone in the United States of America dies every 34 seconds to some form of cardiovascular disease.
There is more to being a Provider than just CPR!
- Being able to recognize a stroke is just as crucial to a persons survival as CPR in some cases!
- Someone in the United States of America dies of a stroke every 5 minutes and 14 seconds
In 2020 Strokes accounted for 1 out of every 21 deaths.
The faster we can get stroke victims to the hospital, the less likely they are to have life long disability from the stroke or even death.
Heart attack vs. Cardiac arrest
A heart attack and cardiac arrest are two different issues
- Cardiac arrest is when the heart stops (or arrests)
- heart attack is a blockage in the heart (usually causing chest pain)
The importance of this difference is the need for immediate action for both, however the treatment is much different. The responding EMS crew/hospital staff will need to know which is happening for better care sooner.
